What We Audit
AmAudit provides specialized utility auditing services for municipalities in Illinois since 2002 and has audited over 110 communities. AmAudit provides an unbiased auditing service under a contingent fee structure and does not resell any utility services. We audit utility taxes, sales taxes, utility services for natural gas, electricity, telecommunications including wireless, and cable. AmAudit identifies areas to reduce costs while maintaining the same service level and identifies lost revenues due to utility tax and billing errors. Our audit is non-invasive and requires very little staff time from clients.
Utility Tax and Sales Tax Audit
The most popular audit service we provide is our Utility Tax & Sales Tax Audit. The overall goal of our tax audit is to identify areas where revenue is being lost due to a variety of factors. Many municipalities charge residents taxes for the use of utilities services such as natural gas, electricity, telephone and cable. AmAudit works in collaboration with the utility tax collector to verify all residents and businesses are 1.) on the appropriate tax rolls, and 2.) are paying the correct level of taxes according to local ordinances. AmAudit also audits sales tax collections by verifying that all businesses within the corporate boundaries of the municipality are actually paying sales taxes and that those taxes are being received. Once our analysis is complete, AmAudit provides a detailed report of its findings and works with the utilities, businesses and municipality to resolve any errors in collection thus increasing revenue
Utility and Telecommunications Cost Audit
The overall goal of our audit is to ensure the municipalities cost for basic utilities such as telecommunications, electricity and natural gas are optimal. We review tariffs, any existing contracts with the utilities, any ordinances guiding cost of utility service and any alternative supplier contracts. Armed with this information, AmAudit prepares findings with recommendations for areas and ways to reduce your costs for these basic services thereby adding new sources of revenue to your budget.
Franchise Agreement Audit
In many states, municipalities allow utilities “rights of way” to install their infrastructures to allow for delivery of telecommunications, cable, electricity and natural gas within the municipality. AmAudit reviews all utility ordinances (called franchise agreements in some states) to ensure compliance by the utility. We identify gaps and provide written findings and recommendations for pursuit of claims, along with assistance in getting these claims resolved.
